The Kosciusko County sheriff's department has identified the victim of Monday night's shooting in Cromwell, saying the gunfire occurred during an attempt by bounty hunters to serve a warrant.
Gary W. Helman, 56, of Cromwell, died in the shooting, the sheriff's department said in a statement. It said he had failed to appear on original charges of resisting law enforcement and battery resulting in bodily injury.
Police said three bounty hunters had entered a property in the 9100 block of East Doswell Drive shortly before 7 p.m. and visually identified Helman as he stood on the back deck of the residence.
A gunbattle ensued outside and inside the residence, police said. They said Helman's twin brother, Larry D. Helman, and one of the bounty hunters were wounded.
Larry Helman and the bounty hunter were taken to separate Fort Wayne hospitals in very serious condition, police said. Gary Helman died at the scene.
The sheriff's department and the county prosecutor's office continue to investigate the incident. Officers from the Indiana State Police, Syracuse police and the county Major Crimes Unit, as well as Syracuse/Turkey Creek EMS, assisted.
