You have to go back to Black and white days in time to see derailment pick-up equipment owned by the railroad.
Nearly every railroad had a "Big Hook" or two dispatched to derailments. Now it contracted out. Never see a
"Big Hook" today. Must have scrapped them.

I'd always heard that the carmen who worked the hook train got paid overtime from the time they left their terminal until they arrived back.
