LINTCO isn't much better. They are retro-fitting air conditioners onto some of their older units though.  We usually see them from October all the way until April.

Maybe these guys know somethin' about buildin' new locomotives after all!

For EMD, a Chinese first
pixel.gif
Electro-Motive Diesel's first locomotive for China, an EMD-designed JT56ACe diesel-electric manufactured jointly with CNR Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co. (DLoco), left the factory in Dalian, China, last month. The locomotive is China's first 6,000-hp diesel-electric. DLoco and EMD will manufacture 300 JT56ACes for the Chinese Ministry of Railways (MoR). In another international development, EMD said an updated Class 66 European locomotive is the first main line diesel-electric to achieve European Union TSI Noise Certification standard for noise reduction.

Further investigation reveals that the new JTAce units for Chinese National Railways uses the 4-stroke H engine. All 6,000-HP! And A/C traction!

Boy howdy! Maybe they know somethin' we don't... EMD spent millions on research, and development for a four-stroke prime mover ta compete head-ta-head with GE's 6-K pony units...only ta see it go down the toilet!

Maybe the 'private' EMD has more moolah ta spend on research ta improve the performance of the "H" engine...and make it viable for the North American market.

This Chinese venture might just be that push towards the future of DE technology! After all, China's markets are wide open, and smart money...BIG money invests there!

A few specs...

The JT56ACe is a 6000 horsepower (4.5 MW) diesel-electric locomotive produced by Electro-Motive Diesels designed for export to China. All JT56ACe locomotives use AC traction motor technology and utilize the EMD H-Engine as their prime mover. The locomotives are capable of meeting the EPA's Tier 2 emissions regulations.[1]

In September 2005, the People's Republic of China announced an order for 300 JT56ACe locomotives. A portion of the locomotives will be assembled in kit form by China's own Dalian Locomotive Works.[1]

Uke, didn't many, many years ago EMD build those SD-40 looking things, but had like a 20 cylinder that put out 4000 horse? I thought I was told at one time they were unreliable, and sold off all the Great Northern units.

Damnit...an eagle just lew across my monitor...

What was the question again?

Oh yeah the 20 cylinder engine. The first ones were 645-E3 models, in SD-45 units. Rated at 3600 ponies. Great Northern ran 'em on every type of train, from high-speed passengers ta heavy drags...coal, taconite, logs!

They worked pretty well...at first. After a couple years they began breaking crankshafts.

Not an inexpensive repair job done by shop forces... Nope. The entire engine hadda come out, and disassembled on the floor just ta get at the crank.

They kept building 'em though. And other outfits ate 'em up. GN stuck by 'em, but ordered fewer than at first, having better luck with the 16-cyl. 645-E3 instead.

When EMD [General Motors] introduced the 645-E3B with many improvements over the E-3, BN tried again. Same thing. So they gave up on the 20's, and sold 'em, after derating 'em ta 3000 from 3600 ponies.

EMD came up with the 710-G engine of 3800 horses ta replace the 645 series. Good power plants, but not as good as plannned. Early problems with assemblies. But the grunts at shops were ready because the engines were virtually the same as ALL other EMDs... Two-stroke diesels, with similar operating components, and tooling, etc.

The 710 [cu. in. per cyl.] is the preferred power plant in damn near every new EMD out there. They put out an honest 4300 horses! And ya can get 'em in either AC or DC traction models. BNsf has a few, but they're too new ta evaluate as long-term performers.

Anyway... EMD has quite the history. And the history goes back to the 1930s. You can Garggle 'em ta find out more'n anybody oughta know, including a few facts about the "H" engine...

Here's a pic of Great Northern's hotshot SD-45 "Hustle Muscle" taken right after she was delivered... She was powered by the 645E3 turbocharged 20 cylinder prime mover, and DC motors... The Traction was by alternator/rectified ta DC and came out at about 600 volts...at 2300 amps. Roughly 3600 horses!

3600 horse in those things seems to yank better than 4400 horse on a GEunK...

Those critters were the backbone of the WC, and when they were maintained (are you listening CN?) they worked like a champ. For whatever reason though, those F45's we got from the Santa Fe didn't pull nearly as well as the straight SD 45's did, even though they were mechanically and electrically the same.
