CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS 3) A suspect sought in the deadly shooting of a young Camden child was taken into custody early Tuesday morning.
Police said 20-year-old Donald Benjamin Lindsey was apprehended in Philadelphia at about 5 a.m., almost 12 hours after a shootout that claimed the life of a four-year-old boy.
An apparent gun battle broke out in the 1300 block of Norris Street near Van Hook Street at about 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Investigators believe the young victim, identified as Brandon Thompson, was struck at least once in the head by a stray bullet while walking with his mother.
Police said the young victim was transported to Cooper University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Officers found close to 40 shell casings on the ground following the shooting.
"This is a tragic incident that is as a result of guns being in the hands of thugs," said Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk.
Thompson's mother, Stephanie, tearfully said she called 911 prior to the shooting after seeing one of the suspects with a gun.
"This could have been avoided if they caught him," she said. "Now my baby's gone, he's only four."
Police are reportedly searching for additional suspects in connection with the shooting.
