Panel OKs Toll Hikes On Pa.-N.J. Bridges

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) A Delaware River Port Authority committee has given the green light to a toll hike on major bridges between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The authority's board will vote on the increases next week. If approved, the higher tolls would go into effect on Sept. 14.

Tolls on the agency's four Philadelphia-area bridges would rise from $3 to $4. The tolls, paid only by vehicles crossing into Pennsylvania, would go to $5 in 2010.

The agency says it needs the money to maintain bridges and trains.

Under the proposal, there would also be a 10 percent increase next month in fares on the PATCO commuter train service. Another 10 percent fare hike would come in 2010.

The port authority owns and operates the Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry and Betsy Ross bridges, as well as PATCO.

I wanted it to go to $5, I am doing all I can to keep those Jerseyites from stealing our jobs and taking the money out of Philly.
