I know, your favorite subject.

It seems that Corman's company has a govt grant to rebuild some of his short run track roadbed and bridges.  He advertised that 100 people were needed as temp hires.

Jobs being hard to find in KY, 2000 plus showed up to get applications.   Naturally the local TV stations were on hand to take this all in for the news.  Coffee and donuts were furnished for the waiting line--2000 is a BIG bunch of people.

Amazing what a bit of govt intervention will cause.  Don't be too hard on Corman, he has done a lot for central KY and may be dieing of cancer.

2,600 people show up for 100 railroad jobs
A massive crowd of job seekers showed up at the RJ Corman Railroad yards in Lexington, Ky., last week, hoping to land a high-paying job, the WKYT Web site reports.

They started waiting in line as early as Friday afternoon. In all, some 2,600 job seekers applied for work with the RJ Corman Railroad Company.

In all, about 100 jobs will be filled for about 12 to 18 months. Those hired will work on repairing and renovating five different railroad lines in the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The jobs pay between $25 and $35 per hour with benefits.

The railroad projects are being funded by federal stimulus money.

(This item was posted on the WKYT Web site March 8, 2010.)

'Nuther Corman story in Fortune mag.  March 21 issue, page 150--the one with the IBM
character on the cover.

Written by Carol Loomis, normally a great business writer.  She kinda got carried away with
Corman's personality / story........................wes

I say any railroad work is good work! Wherever it might be! Railroads keep the country's economy moving! A paycheck from RJ is as good as anybody elses paycheck! Except Uncle warren. He pays bonuses.

Just ask Buckethead. His bonus check is in the mail. Via Boise.

Did you ever see a RR bridge painted red?  Fire engine red?  Come to our town and see em--with the R J Corman logo spread from ditch to ditch.

They are on view in Lexington on at least two main highways.  Seems Mr C.  bought or leased the CSX tracks in Lex and is rebuilding them [badly needed maintenance I am sure]--- Anyone in town can direct you to said bridges.

He also has a bunch of red engines and cars parked down by Rupp Arena.

Almost worth a trip, and you can see the glass hanger at his airport south of town a piece....................................wes / KY

wes, I wonder if the employees realize that they bought the paint and the glass hangar and the plane(s) inside and the fancy private train and the place to park it, etc., etc., with their low non-union wages?

Pretty damn good wage regardless! Oh my...it's not a union outfit... When ya been unemployed for a few months, or years, $30/hr. looks better'n starvation, or not knowing where your next meal's comin' from.

Not ta mention keepin' the roof over yer head, keepin' the kids in decent clothes, and the lights and heat on!

That's what my gut sez!

Yes, they do in Pennsylvania.

Can't remember the exact numbers, but I remember reading that Conrail said it had over 20 MofW men employed to cover the area being sold to Corman. Corman said there would be 2 MofW men hired to do all the work.

LAMCO will match donations but they sure won't do anything about employee discounts. And that, after all the good service Cy gave them. Cy doesn't think they really liked Cy all that much.

Sounds like *cy* is using that non-union cell carrier. The Union Plus poeple get a FAN discount at the union cell service provider.

*cy* could even update his phone to a Blackberry with the union friendly cell carrier.... The girl has probably grown up....

They'll probably be alright as long as they stick to the job at hand. One hell of a loss though... Dude was a youngster by all means! He sounded like an okay guy, and he had a a natural ability ta befriend damn near everybody. A real "Southern Gentleman."

From what the news reports have ta say... And Cy's links, helluva guy RJ Corman was!
