One killed, four wounded in gun battle

An argument over a woman sparked a gun battle on a Southwest Philadelphia street early Saturday, leaving one man dead and four others wounded.

Around 12:10 a.m., police said, a burgundy Cadillac pulled to the corner of 65th and Chester, and a woman emerged from the car. Two men who were standing on the corner exchanged angry words with the driver and two male passengers, then pulled out guns and fired.

The men in the car fired back, police say. As the driver tried to pull away, he was shot in the neck and lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a parked car.

Tawayne Foster, 21, later died from his injuries. The four other men, whom police declined to identify, were wounded. They were taken to the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania.

In all, police say, more than two dozen shots were fired.

Police were analyzing shell casings found at the scene to determine what type of weapons were involved. The investigation was continuing, and police said the shooters will likely face criminal charges.

Briefly... CITY/REGION

Teen a hit-and-run victim

Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver of a black SUV who struck a teenager in Frankford last night. Witnesses told police that a 13-year-old boy was crossing Herbert Street near Arrott, about 7:30 p.m. when the motorist of a black Dodge Charger hit the youngster and drove off, police said. The boy suffered head injuries and is in stable condition at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Tipsters can call the Accident Investigation Division at 215-685-3180.

Young man shot in Northeast

A 18-year-old man is being treated for a gunshot wound to the hip after shots rang out in the Northeast last night, police said. The shooting occurred on Orthodox Street near Torresdale Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. The shooters opened fire as they drove in a black Buick with a Pennsylvania license plate, police said. The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition.

Man is unknowingly stabbed

A 19-year-old man who didn't know he was stabbed waited almost nine hours to get treatment for a wound he suffered during a fight early yesterday in an underground Center City concourse near the 15th Street stop of the Market-Frankford line, police said.

The man said he got into a fight with a group of juveniles at the station about 12:30 a.m. He was taken to the hospital at 9 a.m. by his parents and listed in stable condition, police said.

Kidnapping attempt reported

Police say that a man tried to rob and abduct a woman in a parking lot outside a Lafayette College dormitory in Easton shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday.

Authorities said that the woman managed to get away and was treated for minor injuries at a hospital. Cops said that the man told his victim that he had a knife and a gun, and tried to force her into the trunk of his car.

8 and Counting: Mass Murders in 2009

As Nation Reels From Latest Killings, Some Say Such Shootings Are on the Rise

Clockwise, from upper left: Robert Stewart, Ervin Lupoe, Jiverly Wong and Davon Crawford are four of the seven mass murderers who have captured the public eye so far this year.

As the public struggles to uncover the reasons behind the eight seemingly senseless mass murders so far this year, many researchers are working to determine whether this apparent surge in violence indicates a larger trend, and whether to expect more in the months to come.

Related

Mark Kopta, chairman and professor in the department of psychology at the University of Evansville in Indiana, has researched extensively the country's mass killings, which he defines as attacks leading to the deaths of at least five people, including the killer's suicide.

"This is not a savory subject," Kopta said.

But, he added, it may be one that is becoming increasingly relevant to the U.S. public. In a paper to be presented at the annual meeting of the Midwestern Psychological Association in Chicago this month, he found three incidents in the United States fitting this profile between 1930 and 1970. Three more followed over the course of the 1970s.

In the 1980s, however, there were 10 such incidents of mass murder. The 1990s had 17; and, since the new millennium began, there have been 25 such mass murders.

Six of them occurred last year. And 2009 has already topped that with eight such killings.
