Wheldon dead after massive 15-car wreck sends cars flying at Las Vegas IndyCar race

LAS VEGAS Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died Sunday in a fiery 15-car wreck at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when his car flew over another on Lap 13 and smashed into the wall just outside turn 2.

Wheldon was 33. Drivers were told of Wheldons death in a meeting about two hours after the fiery, smoky crash that many drivers said was the worst they had ever seen.

He won the Indianapolis 500 twice, including this year.

IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries, IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute to in his honor.

Three other drivers, including championship contender Will Power, were hurt in the pileup.

Not a good day in motorsports history. I've been veklempt pretty
much since the news became official. Open wheel racing at 220mph
is almost uncomprehensible and yet 34 drivers took the green flag.
This is the worst crash I've ever seen...the hell and brimstone crash.
What a way to go out. Dan Wheldon took full advantage of his
allotted time on this planet.

Oh man. Yeah that was a terrible sight. Enough is enough when the news plays it every hour, they make sure you get the memory imprinted by showing that fatal moment in time at least twice. You can say for sure he went to the next life in a blink while doing the thing he loved most. Fearsome concept for those nearby but he doesn't have to fret now, anyway.

Let's talk about that hit Jimmie Johnson took last weekend at
Charlotte almost headon into the wall at speed. Immediate
recollections of the crash that took Dale Earnhart's life at
Daytona. Jimmie says it was a "big" hit maybe the worst
of his career. (it sure looked like a hard slam to me).
NASCAR learned quite a few years ago that there is a
"maximus" speed to not to exceed around 205 MPH
for earthbound racing cars to stay on this planet.
Hence we have "restrictor plate" races at Daytona and
next Sunday's race at Talladega. The track records at each
track will never be broken or even touched as they were
set in pre-restrictor-plate days. I feel that most people/
fans can live with 200mph racing. Indy Cars I think they
already know they need to draw the line now on the "maximus"
speeds to preserve the sport and the drivers lives. I tell you
though had the IZOD Indy Car race at Las Vegas last Sunday
went the way it was "envisioned", your would have seen the
best open-wheel race ever. The drama of the race winding
down and Wheldon race running 3rd or 4th gunning for that
5$ million to win comming from last the last starting position.
Curious how the driver payout went after calling the race after
15 laps. Huge money to be dispersed. Those IZOD boys/girls
don't show up for free.
