MESA: Debris cleared after train strikes trailer

UPDATE 3:30 PM: Debris has been cleared from a railroad crossing in Mesa after a freight train struck a lowboy trailer on the Sheffield Road rail crossing late this morning.

No one was injured in the incident, which closed the railroad and the crossing for about three hours, said Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Justin Gerry. The driver who had been hauling the trailer was cited by troopers from the Washington State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Division for not having a proper commercial driver's license.

Gerry said the man hauling the trailer, who's identity was not immediately available, was eastbound on Sheffield Road when the lowboy became high-centered on the crossing. The man unhooked the trailer and unloaded a fertilizer spreader that was on the lowboy to create more clearance.

The train struck the trailer at about 11:15 a.m. as the man went to reattach the trailer to his semi-truck, Gerry said.

Damage to the locomotive and trailer was minor, Gerry said. Officials from BNSF Railway were still inspecting the rail Sunday afternoon but the train was allowed to continue after the debris was cleared. The investigation into the crash is continuing.

ORIGINAL POST: MESA A northbound freight train on the BNSF railroad struck a tractor trailer stuck on the Sheffield Road rail crossing earlier today.

Details about the crash were not immediately available and it's unknown if there were any injuries. The incident closed the rail line and the crossing. Franklin County Sheriff's deputies and officials from BNSF are reportedly at the scene.

Ending up high-centered on a railroad crossing with no way to
move seems to get re-played over and over and over. How can
this happen so many times in the last 100+ years? I don't watch
the show but there is one called a "1000 Ways to Die" and
essentially there is and the soul must experience every which-way the
"body" can die. Your "higher-self" knows what's left to be
"crossed-off the list". For me it wont be getting clobbered at a
grade crossing. For others...it will be a "glorious exit".
