Scene at border crossing in Blaine

BLAINE, Wash.

A Canada Border Services Agency officer has been injured in a shooting at the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine.

The Whatcom County Sheriff's Office said the shooting occurred on the Canadian side.

Early reports suggest a female officer was shot in the neck Tuesday afternoon.  The Sheriff's Office did not know if  the gunman killed himself at the scene or if he was shot by an officer.

GlobalBC reporters at the scene said the suspect was driving a white Ford Econoline with Washington plates.

The extent of the officer's injuries are not yet known, but she has been transported to a hospital in Canada.

The crossing has been closed.   All lanes of northbound Interstate 5 are blocked, and northbound drivers are being diverted to SR 543.

BLAINE, Wash. -- A female Canadian border agent was shot in the neck by a gunman at the Peace Arch border crossing Tuesday afternoon, the Canada Border Services Agency confirmed to Canada's CTV.

There is no word on the condition of the border agent. She's being airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, B.C.

Witnesses report the gunman then turned the gun on himself. Witnesses also report to CTV the gunman was driving a white van with Washington license plates.

The shooting happened just after 2 p.m. on the Canadian side of the border where British Columbia's Highway 99 meets Washington's I-5. That crossing is closed as police investigate and people will need to divert to the crossing along Washington's SR-543.
