SEATTLE - A man suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday morning when he was struck by a Sound Transit light rail train in Seattle's SODO District, officials said.
Police and medics responded to the scene, at 5th Avenue and South Holgate Street, at about 7:15 a.m. after receiving a report of a pedestrian hit by a train.
The victim, a man believed to be in his 50s, suffered heavy trauma and was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
Investigators are at the scene, and it was not immediately clear what led up to the accident. South Holgate Street is closed between 4th and 6th avenues during the investigation.
Central Link light rail service is temporarily interrupted while the accident is investigated. Link trains are not operating in either direction between SODO Station and the tunnel.
Commuters heading north toward downtown Seattle should board the Metro-operated Link Shuttle bus Route 97 on SODO Busway and S. Lander Street adjacent to SODO Station.
Those heading south toward Sea Tac Airport should board the Metro-operated Link Shuttle bus Route 97 in the tunnel heading south and transfer to the Link train at SODO Station.
Trains are operating normally, but with possible delays, between the SODO and SeaTac Stations in both directions. Updates will be provided as they become available.
