Workin' in Spokane... Trips ta North Idaho took us all through the St. Joe area exploring old mine sites, smelters, and railroad towns. Avery still had the Milwaukee crew change point, and a proper hotel, a few bars, whorehouses, and more. But the Milwaukee was playing a loser's game tryin' ta keep up with BN, UP, and SI.

Around 1980 they just gave it up...pulled up the rails, and the rest is history! Avery just about died without Milwaukee. Their western terminus was Miles City, Montana after that! And electrification was history too!

At one point they entered Spokane on UP as the FIFTH outfit in town! But they had their own yard!

Railroad has been gone for over 30 years, now relying on tourons tubing and fishing in the St. Joe river. Hot in the summer, cold in the winter. I spent an afternoon there one week.
