Winterlike Storm Threatens Major Flooding in Northwest

By Alex Sosnowski, Expert Senior Meteorologist

Play video

The first powerful winterlike storm of the season will take aim on the Pacific Northwest this weekend into Monday with potentially disastrous flooding, damaging winds and dangerous seas.

The storm will grow into a monster over the Gulf of Alaska, where it will stall. Winds of 40 to 60 mph will roar over the ocean raising 15- to 30-foot seas.

As the storm expands southward and eastward, it will spread heavy rain, flooding, travel delays, high winds, pounding surf and rough seas first to British Columbia, then to Washington and Oregon and finally to northernmost California.

The worst conditions are likely to stay north of California, and will instead target areas farther north on Saturday with another heavy dose later Sunday into Sunday night. The pulse of rain Sunday night will be associated with some of the leftover moisture from the former Western Pacific Typhoon Pabuk that brushed near Japan this past week.

2-weeks ago it was 88 out. A week ago it was 80 out. Today is was 55 out.
This whole past week has been cloudy/wet/foggy/cool. The "wood-stove"
fall season has begun as I had 3-4 fires the past week. No "UV index" to
help out with my heat. All set for the big storm I guess. The beginning of
leaves on your lawn til past Thanksgiving. Friday was more grey than wet
but the next 4 days the rain gauges will be registering rainfall.

Here's hoping my friends get no flooding eh.

We love this time of year, here.

Bugs are not very interested in hunting us anymore and the lake trouts are hungry.

More than our fair share of precipitation this year, tu.

It always amazes me, when weather watching, how much of 'it' is based on precipitation, and the variants. Drizzle. Light showers. Heavy showers... Intermittent showers. Rain. It's all rain as far as I can tell. Stand out there and get wet. But all this bullshit about describing a natural phenomenon... Call it what it is.

If it ain't snow, or hail, or frozen...it's rain! Just say "It's rainin' out, take yer hat, and coat!" maybe a sweater tu! Try ta stay dry and warm! It's just the beginning of a long, long season. No fall, or autumn this year.

Starting today, it's winter in the GPNW!

That'll make a nasty smellin' phart sack.....

And, BTW, you whiny crybabies aren't even considering Cnippy's plight. It is 65 degrees (Amurican) and WINDY! in Snippylvania. That really makes a difference.

Oh, it's getting to be that time again, when we have to put up with Snippy's whining and complaining about the weather in his locale. Every fall and winter, it's the same thing.

Scattered power outages tu! Sounds like 8500 all over the place, from Seattle to outlying suburbs. Wind blown trees, limbs are the must likely causes account of gusts up ta 60-MPH!

We were warned of the possibilities...

On this worst of Fall Weather days in Seattle, it held 3-major
sporting events. Oakland A's at Safeco Field was no problem
as the re-tractable roof did its thing and the game was
"played" to a win for the M's that punctured any hopes
that the A's would have home-field advantage throughout
the playoffs. M's win 7-5 with the A's tryin' hard to win.
Next would be the UW Huskies hosting the Arizona
Wildcats at the newly renovated Husky Stadium.
The first half of the game was played in driving heavy
rains that any scoring seemed not possible. Somehow
the UW finds a way to play through the rain and wins.
Washington State (WSU) plays a (home) game at
the same place the Seattle Seahawks play each
season "Century Link Field". WSU was hosting Stanford
and it dint go well for WSU. I was able to compare
the rainfall in Seattle with the rainfall in the Oregon-
Cal game in Eugene at the same time and it was
the same...very wet rain.

Might want to look-up a "butcher" for those fish. Freeszer
full of trout steaks...and a picture that will live on forever.
