A Calgary woman's developmentally disabled son is caught in a U.S. tax quagmire that she fears may cost him the money she spent years setting aside for his financial future.

"He's entrapped," said Carol Tapanila, the 70-year-old mother. "There's no way out. He is entrapped into U.S. citizenship."

Her 40-year-old son was born in a Calgary hospital, but automatically received U.S. citizenship because both his parents were American. That simple fact may soon create financial woes for the Tapanila family.

Starting in July, a new U.S. tax law, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), goes into effect. It requires banks around the world to sift through client accounts to find anyone with U.S. connections and send that information to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service

Why should Canada, a sovereign nation bow to US law? The IRS should be about catching crooks who avoid paying their fair share of income taxes owed under US-IRS law.

Canadian citizens oughta be exempt from this activity by an American government agency whose strongarm tactics scare the hell outa hard working people trying to earn a living! Just regular people, law abiding tax payers who'd never cheat at anything, for fear of being arrested!

Every American worker worries more about being visited, or summoned by the IRS than anything else!

Sovereign nations, whether trade partners or not, should tell the IRS ta just get lost! And stop sharing their own citizens financial information with the American IRS. What will IRS do then? Canada owes the US gov't. nothing.

Fuck 'em!

Aks Phreddie the K (AKA: Phast Phreight...) how much average Amaricuns pay H&R Blockheads, and other "tax preparers" ta do theirs...all to avoid visitations by the above agency!

People who have little to fear from the IRS, still cringe at the mere mention of words like audit...or summons! Why? It's the Feds at their worst, most heinous, evil... They are all powerful. They know everything, and will spend millions of other taxpayers money to extract ever cent owed.

Your query deserves a visit by agents (several) of the IRS. In the middle of the night! You sir have been warned!
