Al Gore ('member him?) lied to us. He did not invent the www, or internets! Nope! This other guy did!

Uke, how long have YOU been a participant on the World Wide Web?

Since 1998. Not really long enough apparently. But what the hell... I resisted buying a computer. My argument against the purchase was "Why do I need a computer? There's no reason to get all that data... I can read newspapers, books, watch the news on TV, etc.!"

First one: Win 95, dial-up connection. Same neighborhood... And you know where the whole thing's at today. Huge, truly worldwide, damn near everybody is connected to all that 'data' all the time!

Same ol' same ol'... Just different. And faster! Sixteen years...has it really been that long?

After all, you didn't have a computer in the 1970's and you were getting along fine.

We got our first computer about 1992, IIRC, about Christmastime, a clone job.  From the beginning, we had this predecessor of today's online world:

I remember DOS 2.1, I remember when Windows 3 came out (the first windows that was sold publically), I'd guess 31 years so far. I remember XT and AT IBM clones.

I always called it the internet tho not necessarily the World Wide Web. I remember Alt.Transport.Rail and I was on that and others (misc.something.something) for a long time and

then lurked around Purdys site, and UURR, Then found TRF , then the same ride as most of Ya'all. So, I think 25 years is a little off, but I could give a fawk to do the research ta prove it.

First time I used a computer was at Spokane Community College, 1984. It was something Radio Shack built. Everybody called it a "Trash 80." In reality it was a TRS-80, and it was a DOS operator. The class was a mech. engrng. math class. Everybody was 'playing' on these little things... I was doing shit like plotting trajectories of projectiles, at muzzle velocity, and drop over distance... I found a 'diskette' recently that's about 8" dia. that could only be one of those problems that was saved from that class!

The internets/www... Whuh?

alt.transport.rail. I think I posted to that a few times myself. I believe there was something misc., tu. I also remember logging into the BLE site and reading it, when I was paying for the long distance charges.

Never had much to do with Purdy's site, mostly because I never stumbled onto it until its waning days. Ah, the UUR, that was the wild frontier.

I kinda miss Purdy's site, amd I do remember El Paso Express. And exchanged a few messages with Ruck about BN stuff... And Snakebites. The small 'indy' sites where railroaders could kick it 'round were the most fun reading!

Purdy urged Facklam, who was something of a wheel with Bill, to start his own website for railroaders only, because Purdy's wide open attitude was becoming further polluted by right-wing, and anti abortion, Christian nutcases at every turn!

Believe it or don't, it was Denver who actually pushed me to become a member of TRF. And our ol' bud Lake Tower/GP-30 kinda pushed for a Roundhouse/Mechanical forum, with me as mod. I resisted the idea at first, then agreed to do it. It was fun...for a while! And that was pretty much where I opined... There were a couple other mechanical types as well, from the car side. And another machinist, an electrical type, and a couple MOW cats, and a signal maintainer...

I really don't know all the ins and outs of that story, but some of the notables (Brother Luv Jelly, Troll, TuManCru, Young Conducta, and others...) washed up here after Zeb sunk that site in a paranoid hissy-fit!

And although Zeb said he wanted me (dumb ass me) ta take over as admin, and run the thing, I know goddamn good and well I wasn't prepared for that shit! No way, no how, no day! I still don't know how ta set up, run, or maintain a website. But I'm grateful Troll, and Tu, and Rob, and yes Q...wherever he might be now...helped launch this place!

I don't understand how it works, but I'm happy it's still here. It ain't mine, but as long as I can, I'll help ta keep it going! I don't wanna see another 'good ship' go down! Too damn many have already been scuttled!

'Nuff already!
