Cano's HR rallies Mariners, but A's get final say

Seattle one game behind KC in Wild Card race with loss to Oakland

OAK@SEA: Cano hits towering solo shot to tie the game

SEATTLE -- The Mariners got just about everything you'd want Saturday night at Safeco Field. Sellout crowd. Strong outing from Felix Hernandez. Electric atmosphere for a game with postseason implications.

But in the end, the A's spoiled the party with four walks off closer Fernando Rodney in the top of the 10th as they pulled out a 3-2 victory that dropped the Mariners a game back in the American League Wild Card chase.

"That was a tough one," Hernandez said in a quiet Mariners clubhouse. "We battled, but that was tough. That's all I can say."

Rodney, who tied the club record with his 45th save of the season a night earlier, walked the bases loaded with one out in the 10th -- including one intentional pass after the leadoff runner was sacrificed to second -- then struck out Brandon Moss before forcing in the go-ahead run on four straight balls to Jed Lowrie.

"It was tough to find the strike zone," Rodney said. "I was a little bit jumpy on the mound. I don't know why. Maybe it was emotional. I tried my best. It didn't happen. I'll be ready for tomorrow."

Great. Another one in the toilet! Runners reach base in six innings, and bases loaded couple times...and they couldn't fuckin' score one lousy run! They just handed ta Oakland 4-zip!

The home stand is done for 2014 thankfully... Maybe they can pick up a few wins on the road. Mighty big odds against the Ms gettin' into the playoffs after this!

Well there's always next year.

Wow!..I dont know what to think after this 3-game series
at home with the Oakland A's. Started off good with some great
pitching and some home-runs and M's take game 1. Game 2
King Felix gets another "ultra-quality" start going 7-innings
and giving up 2-runs or less. Felix gets bailed-out of a loss
by a Robinson Cano HR late to make it 2-2..another "no-
decision" for King Felix. The game goes to the 10th-inning
and I heard somebody say either on radio or TV, that when
its a home game, you bring in your closer to pitch the 10th
and that would be Fernando Rodney. What a difference a
night makes as in Friday nights game Fernando ties the M's
save record with Sasaki at 45 saves. I mean Rodney has
been pitching pretty damn good but then a night of horrors
he pitched himself to a loss. Rodney walks in the winning run
as Oakland just had to stand there at the plate watch Rodney
throw one "ball" after another. I read in the newspaper where
Rodney said "I couldnt find the plate" and expects to do better
next time. I know he will as everyone is going to a have a
sucky day and return to greatness just like normal. That loss
just left me a little on the bum more that it was such a great
chance to beat the A's as say Rodney does his usual and the
A's are 1-2-3 in the top of the 10th and the M's get a big hit
to win-it in walk-off fashion. Well that wasnt what happened.
So Sunday Chris Young gets the start against newly Oakland
A Jon Lester and I had reservations that Chris Young could
pitch well against the A's but he did a great job going 6-innings
with just one-run allowed. Then it was time for the best bullpen
in the AL to have a sucky day as they give-up 3 more runs for
an Oakland win and Oakland leaves Seattle with a 2-1 series
win and putting the M's another game back in the Wild Card.
This was a chance for the M's to grab more than the top-spot but
it dint happen. M's go on the last regular season roadtrip
of the season with visits to the Angels, Astros, Blue Jays.
M's have basically their win margin to date from winning
on the road so lets hope that trend continues.

Well shit, time ta face the music. Looks like our home boys are out of the final chase as it were. Lookin' at it from a purely 'numbers' standpoint, it's a maybe... But they really need a miracle. What with a mere 14 games left in the season, and they're trailing KC by 3 in the wild card chase. It may as well be back to spring training, 'cause it's gonna be one long off season!

Tues. Sep. 16th. Where's this team been lately? Why can't they be as aggressive as tonight more often? Maybe the management at the top doesn't pay 'em enough, or they ask too damn much outa the starters, or the team just really doesn't give a shit 'cause the season's damn near over, and they just wanna go home! Anyway, talk about a lopsided score...

Mariners break out to inch closer in WC race

Seattle sits one game back of KC; Smith wins in relief of Elias

video thumbnail

SEA@LAA: Mariners plate six runs in 6th vs. Angels

ANAHEIM -- Two games into a rugged 11-game road trip, the journey suddenly got a lot smoother for the Mariners on Tuesday night as they steamrolled the Angels, 13-2, and pulled within a game of an American League Wild Card berth.

Although the Mariners lost starting pitcher Roenis Elias, who was pulled in the fourth inning with stiffness in his left elbow, they snapped a three-game skid and broke out of a prolonged offensive slump while improving to 81-69.

The 81 wins guarantee Seattle a non-losing season for just the third time in the past 11 years, and the Mariners improved their AL-best road record to 43-29, tied for the fifth-most road victories in franchise history with nine left on this trip.

Seattle's previously struggling lineup was handcuffed by Angels spot starter Cory Rasmus for four innings but jumped on relievers Jason Grilli and Mike Morin for four runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead on doubles by Mike Zunino, Chris Taylor and Dustin Ackley.

Zunino's two-run shot to center sailed over the head of Mike Trout, who didn't track the ball well as it tailed behind him. That hit snapped an 0-for-18 streak with runners in scoring position for Seattle and Taylor followed with a drive to left that scored Zunino with the go-ahead run as Grilli quickly coughed up Rasmus' lead.

Ackley then added another RBI double off Morin as a Seattle squad that hadn't scored more than four runs in any of its previous nine games matched that total in the fifth inning alone. The Mariners totaled just three runs in the previous three games combined.

Seattle then cranked out six more runs on seven hits and a hit batter in the sixth as the Halos' bullpen day blew up. Angels manager Mike Scioscia went with an all-relief crew again while patching things together in Garrett Richards' absence.

Combined with the Royals' 7-5 loss to the White Sox, Seattle trails Kansas City by one game in the chase for the AL's second Wild Card spot and is just two games back of the A's for the first Wild Card position after Oakland lost, 6-3, to Texas.

The Angels jumped on Elias for two runs in the first with RBI singles by Albert Pujols and David Freese after the rookie hit leadoff batter Kole Calhoun and gave up a base hit to Trout. That frame could have been worse, but Elias induced an inning-ending double play from Josh Hamilton, who was making his first appearance in 12 days due to a sore shoulder.

Elias got through the next two innings unscathed but was removed following a leadoff single by Hamilton in the fourth after feeling some stiffness in his left elbow. With the no-decision, the youngster from Cuba remains 10-12 with a 3.85 ERA in 29 starts.

Rookie right-hander Carson Smith picked up his first career victory in relief as he replaced Elias and threw two scoreless innings with just one walk. Smith has yet to allow a run in 6 2/3 innings over five appearances since being called up at the start of September.

Kyle Seager, Kendrys Morales, Zunino and Taylor each wound up with two hits as Seattle totaled 14 for the game. Zunino also was hit by pitches twice, raising his season total to an AL-leading 17. The 13 runs equaled a season high and was the 10th time this season Seattle has scored 10 or more in a game, their most-double digit outings since 12 in 2007.

Monday nights M's at Angels and its 92 degrees with humidity
at the 7:05pm start time..shit this was worse than the last
trip to Texas. Iwakuma has not been himself lately and could
be "wore-out" and I could see this start for him ending-up this
way. 7-runs is like a bad-luck meltdown for a starting pitcher
with 14 wins so far this season. Maybe his next start it wont be
95 degrees out and maybe get dialed-in. With the losing streak
going on...perhaps the M's are going to blow their chance for
that 2nd wildcard but a sudden reversal of fortune happened
Tuesday night in Anaheim as the M's explode out of a long
offence drought with a an offensive "flash-flood". Angels had
to fill this start with the bullpen..the first guy did pretty good,
the rest got hammered as everybody in the M's line-up got hits
o'plenty. I was a little worried after the 8-1 loss Monday but
now after the 13-2 win Tuesday..I think the games Wed-Thurs
will pitching duels in which the M's have James Paxton and
King Felix going. Can the offensive wake-up for the M's
carry through these last 2 games with the Angels and beyond.

To wrap-up the Angels 4-game series, James Paxton pitched
fantastic but comes up with a "L". M's bullpen not getting it
done lately. Too much CJ Wilson for the Angels in game 3. King Felix
pitched 7-shut-out innings and gets another "ultra-quality"
and his 11th or 13th "no-decision" this season. If the M's could
score some runs when Felix pitches Felix would be a 25-game
winner but he misses another good chance at 15 wins. Logan
Morrison is the hero in game 4 as he connects for 3-run hr
in the top of the 9th and M's get the win and leave LA with a
2-2 split with the hottest team in MLB.

On to Houston to play those pesky Astros. M' s plane and team
dont get into to Houston until about 6am Friday morning so
not much sleep for anybody and batting practice was canceled.
M's just explode on the Astros for 10-5 win Friday night and I
sure dint see that coming but I'll take it. Saturday it was Chris
Young getting "another start" for the M's. I had a bad feeling
about Chris Young pitching again the rest of this season and
this was further proof as he gives up 4-hrs enroute to a 10-1
Astro stomping of the M's. Chris has been valuable to where
the M's are now but the M's need to shut him down as he's
just wore-out. Speaking of "wore-out", Iwakuma is at that
stage as well as he hasnt had a good start in a month..
in fact his worst starts of his career as he had a hard time
geting past the 3rd inning against the Astros Sunday afternoon
and took the loss and really looks ineffective. So the M's lose
the series to the Astros 2-1 and now play 4 games at Toronto
starting Monday night. M's a game and a half from wildcard
P2. M's still in the hunt for "Red October".

Well the hunt for "Red Ocktober" just sprung a leak.
The M's were hoping King Felix would have a King Felix
start but he joins the last 4 M's starting pitchers in having
their worst starts of the whole season and the best bullpen
in the MLB melts down as well. These 2 games in Toronto
have been huge blowouts early and the M's offence has
no chance to rally for 10 runs or 8 runs to get back into it.
I dont know what to say as the M's have a lot of chances to
win some games down the stretch and the offence havent
come through. But the big story is the M's pitching staff
has run out of gas. Chris Young is sent to the bullpen and
Tiawan Walker will get his start Wednesday. M's start
Wednesday night 3 games out of the 2nd wildcard spot
with 5-games to play. Tiawan Walker is the M's last hope
to pitch a great game and get a win against this Blue Jay
team. M's got to win. Oakland is shooting themselves in the
foot as well. Will be watching to see how it turns out.

This was a heart-breaker loss by the M's in game 3 at
Toronto as Taiwan Walker vs Mark Burley and a pitching
duel that went 8-innings with the score 0-0. Walker walks
an ex-M in the bottom of the 8th. So with 2-out a Blue Jay
manages to hit a pop-up into the Bermuda Triangle of
outfielders and infielders and it takes a "superball bounce"
off the astroturf a good 30ft and there was no chance to
throw the ex-M at the plate and the Blue Jays win.
I've allowed myself to get emotional with the M's season
and this loss puts the M's season down to 4 games and
not out of it yet as Oakland and KC lost as well.
Hard to feel real comfortable about a "M's Bullpen"
getting the start against Toronto who has to do the
same thing "using their bullpen" to get through this game.
"Bullpen vs Bullpen"..I not sure Ive seen that happen too
many times. No starting pitcher available so see what your
bullpen of 11-pitchers can do. M's need to win this one.

Recap: Toronto vs. Seattle

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - One hour and 59 minutes -- that's how long it took the Toronto Blue Jays to beat the Seattle Mariners for a third day in a row.

Fourteen years -- that's how long it's been since Mark Buehrle failed to reach 200 innings pitched in a season.

Ryan Goins hit an RBI bloop single in the eighth inning, Buehrle worked into the ninth to reach the 200 plateau once again, and the Blue Jays held on for a 1-0 win on Wednesday night, further damaging Seattle's playoff push.

Baserunners were rare against Buehrle and Seattle starter Taijuan Walker, who combined to give up just seven hits and two walks.

Buehrle stayed in for the ninth, but was lifted after giving up a leadoff hit to Chris Taylor. Pinch-runner James Jones was then picked off on a quick move to first base by Aaron Sanchez, who got two more quick outs to seal the win.

Buehrle (13-10) struck out 10 batters, walked one and gave up three hits while reaching 202 innings for the season. The 35-year-old lefty has hit the mark in each of his 15 MLB seasons except the first, in 2000, when he pitched mostly out of the bullpen for the White Sox.

It was only Buehrle's second victory in his last 10 trips to the mound at the end of a season he started 10-1.

"He was as good as you're ever going to see him -- as good as we've seen him," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "His ball was really ducking and darting in there. He felt strong."

The Blue Jays, who won the first two games of the series by a combined score of 24-6, will go for the sweep on Thursday.

They've already blasted a hole in Seattle's playoff chances.

The Mariners, looking for their first postseason appearance since tying the major-league record with 116 wins in 2001, have lost five in a row. They are three games out of a wild-card spot with four to play.

"We needed to win," Walker said. "It's tough right now."

Walker (2-3) did what he could in his first career complete game, surrendering just four hits and a walk while striking out six. He fared much better than James Paxton and staff ace Felix Hernandez, who were roughed up in first two games of the series.

Buehrle faced two batters over the minimum through eight innings and the offense gave him the only run support he needed in the bottom of the inning with a little help from the Rogers Centre turf.

Munenori Kawasaki, who walked, took off on a hit-and-run and scored all the way from first base on Goins' soft blooper, which bounced high off the field in right-center field after dropping in between two outfielders and the second baseman.

The Mariners had just two runners in scoring position all night -- Corey Hart after he hit a leadoff ground-rule double in the second inning and made it to third; and Mike Zunino, who drew a leadoff walk in the sixth and went to second on a bunt.

This is the last hurrah for these guys. They managed ta eke out a W against the Blue jays to avoid a four game sweep! But one game outa four? Pretty bad that.

And now they're down ta the final three games of the season... Versus arch rivals on their home turf. Los Angeles Angels. Can they make a showing?

TORONTO Logan Morrison hit two home runs, Mike Zunino also connected and the Seattle Mariners kept their faint playoff hopes alive, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 Thursday.

Morrison hit a three-run blast off Todd Redmond in the fourth and added a solo shot off Aaron Loup (4-4) in the sixth as the Mariners avoided a four-game sweep and snapped a five-game losing streak.

The victory means the Mariners will go into the final three games of the season trailing wild-card contenders Kansas City and Oakland by no more than three games. Both the Royals and Athletics were due to play later Thursday.

It was the second multihomer game of Morrison's career. Five of his 11 home runs this season have come in September.

Yoervis Medina (5-3) worked one inning for the win and Fernando Rodney, the ninth Seattle pitcher of the game, gave up Kevin Pillar's leadoff homer in the ninth but finished for his 47th save in 50 chances.

Toronto took a 2-0 lead against Mariners starter Tom Wilhelmsen in the second, but the Mariners answered with a four-run fourth. Chris Taylor led off with a bunt single, Seattle's first hit of the game and left-hander Daniel Norris left after a one-out walk to Kendrys Morales.

Todd Redmond came on and gave up an RBI single to Kyle Seager. Morrison crushed Redmond's next pitch into the center field seats. The outburst snapped an 18-inning scoreless drought for the Mariners.

The Blue Jays tied it in the fifth on Edwin Encarnacion's sacrifice fly and Adam Lind's RBI single, but Morrison led off the sixth with a homer into the right field bullpen. One out later, Zunino drilled a Dustin McGowan pitch into the left field bullpen, his 22nd home run.

Seager made it 7-4 with an RBI single off Brandon Morrow in the seventh.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Mariners: 2B Robinson Cano started at DH Thursday to give his legs a break after three consecutive games on Toronto's artificial turf.

Blue Jays: OF Jose Bautista and SS Jose Reyes got the day off.

UP NEXT

Mariners: Seattle returns home Friday to begin a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels. RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (14-9) faces Angels RHP Jered Weaver (18-8). Iwakuma has lost his past three starts, allowing 15 ER in 12 IP.

Blue Jays: Toronto wraps up its season by hosting AL East champion Baltimore in a three-game series beginning Friday. Blue Jays RHP Drew Hutchison (10-13) faces Orioles RHP Chris Tillman (13-5). Hutchison is 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA in five starts against Baltimore this season.

Wow its great to leave Tronto with a win as it took a combimed
effort of 9 bullpen pitchers to get this win and Rodney gets
save to increase to 47 saves and new M's record. M's needed
some offence and got it as "LoMo" hits 2 out of the park.
So the last 3 games of the season are at Safeco against the
Angels. Oakland lost their game at Texas Thursday so the
M's are 2-games behind the A's for any chance to make the
wildcard. So Iwakuma gets the start Friday night at Safeco
against the Angels of which he has a winning record against
but wiltered in the 95 degree heat last start at Los Angeles.
I mean I couldnt pitch for very long in 95 degree weather
and neither could Iwakuma so I can understand the results
and early exit. Iwakuma got to pitch in Texas with very
similiar temps a week or so ago dint do so well either.
Hishashi Iwakuma will not be pitching in any hot weather
Friday night at Safeco against the Angels. I guess you could
call me a "sports astrologer" as well and so I get to "peer"
into an athletes life to see if the stars are in "alignment"
for a win. Iwakuma has been in slide of 5 games where
it seems everything he usually doesnt give-up has been
"gotten". So I investigated his transit report and I think
this astrological aspect is giving Iwakuma the most trouble..
"Transiting Neptune semi-square Mars". Pretty sure Hishashi
has no clue what is happening to him and how he can
figure out how to "compensate or correct" the clestial
influence.

Before Sep 21 2014 - Beyond Sep 30 2014, Transiting Neptune is SemiSquare your Natal Mars

During this period you can expect to experience difficulties achieving your objectives, because your energies and self-motivation are lower than usual. In fact, under this influence you will often feel quite washed out and powerless. Physically, your body is unusually prone to infection at this time, so increased consideration to your health is advisable. Mars, in your horoscope, represents the force that enables you to actively go after what you want in life. It is your ego-drive, competitive spirit, willpower and vigor. Neptune, on the other hand, is associated with the sensitive, illusionary, yielding and drifting side of your nature. It also represents chaos, deception and vagueness. Under Neptune's influence, Mars cannot act decisively or effectively. Consequently, you feel weakened and ineffectual. This can lead to frustration and a misdirecting of your vital energies.

So what will Hishasi Iwakuma have on Friday night at Safeco Field in cool

weather in his last start of the season with a Mariner must win against

the Angels.  Jared Weaver getting the start for the Angels and I'm hoping

he throws "batting practice" stuff during his time in the game.

I hope the Mariners on the long plane ride home from Tronto have

come together in agreement to go on an offensive surge unpresidented

the next 3-games.

Hishashi Iwakuma is a "warrior" and found it again for
6-innings and that was enough to get his 15th win of the
season. I learnt prior to this start that Iwakuma has been
dealing with back issues and groin issues or basically
pitching in a lot pain the last month. He looked great
tonight and thats what the M's hoped for and get a win against
the Angels at Safeco. M's had to win this game and they did but
Oakland beat the Rangers Friday night so the M's still 2-games
back with 2-games to play. "So you say there's a chance?"
M's have James Paxton and King Felix going Saturday and
Sunday so there is a chance they could both throw shut-outs
and maybe sweep the Angels. Biggest deciding day of the M's
season Saturday..M's win and Oakland loses to Texas. If its
any other way..the M's had a great season or it Sundays game
to decide it.

Hard ta believe but a big win for the home team. They stranded more base runners than any other team in MLB... Bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, nobody out... They couldn't score! Unfuckinbelievable!

Somehow they managed ta score one run ta get their runner home, and finish it 2-1, after 11 innings!

Final: Mariners 2, Angels 1 (11 inn.)

By JEFF FLETCHER / STAFF WRITER

SEATTLE Despite a 2-1, 11-inning loss to the Seattle Mariners, Saturday night worked out pretty well for the Angels.

C.J. Wilson pitched into the seventh inning and allowed just one run, a strong performance in his final tuneup before the division series next week.

The Angels, who had nothing to gain by winning because theyve already clinched the top record in the American League, apparently managed to get through it without anyone getting hurt.

The Mariners won it on a fielder's choice when the Angels could not turn a double play. Second baseman Grant Green, who could have thrown home for an out, mishandled the grounder and was too slow to get the double play.

The Mariners victory, coupled with the results of the three other games with bearing on the American League postseason picture, means that the Angels still could be playing any of four teams next week.

The wild card game the winner of which will face the Angels in the division series will match the Detroit Tigers or Kansas City Royals against the Mariners or Oakland As.

Heading into the final day of the regular season, Detroit leads Kansas City by one game in the American League Central, with the loser getting the wild card. Oakland leads Seattle by one game for the second wild card. If either of those pairs are tied after Sunday, they would play on Monday.

While the Angels wait, they can at least take solace in Wilsons performance.

After allowing six runs and getting only two outs in his last outing, Wilson was much sharper.

Wilson, whose next outing is likely to be Game 2 of the division series, got the help of two double plays behind him. Shortstop Erick Aybar also made a nice backhand stab of a Robinson Cano grounder in the sixth, snuffing out a rally.

When he took the mound in the seventh with a 1-0 lead, he had thrown just 79 pitches. Wilson then walked Kyle Seager and he gave up Logan Morrisons game-tying double, ending his night.

The Mariners had a golden opportunity to win it in ninth, when they loaded the bases with no outs against Jason Grilli. Grilli, who hasnt been as sharp lately, struck the next two hitters and escaped the jam with a groundout.

The Angels played the last few innings with most of their starters on the bench, pulled after they came to the plate for the fourth time.

Scioscia said before the game he would start his everyday players so they would stay sharp, and also to respect the integrity of the race between Seattle and Oakland, but only to a pointThere is only so much we can do, so were going to be mindful of a couple things, he said. Keeping their edge, but not getting fatigued.
