Mariners glad to be on the road again after dropping a series
against Texas and Washington at home recently. M's have
a winning record against the A's so far this year and seem
to play well in Oakland. Chris Young the Giant had the worst
start of his season and maybe his career giving up 5-runs in
2/3's innings to the A's in the 1st inning. M's bullpen just
happen to have a rested Taiwan Walker and he came in to
pitch the 2nd and beyond as he was great over 6-innings.
Is Chris Young done? He says no and Lloyd Mac has him
pitching again at Texas so we will see. So M's lose game 1
6-1. James Paxton is one stoneface pitcher and he had his
stuff in game 2 and shutting out the A's for 7 and 2/3's innings.
He left the game with a few runners on board and of course
they scored as James watched in the dugout. Fernando Rodney
made it interesting in the 9th giving up 2-runs but he just
happen to have a 3-run lead so the M's win 6-5 and Rodney
shoots his 40th arrow. So the "rubber game" on a glorious
day in Oakland Ca. Wednesday has your "marque" pitching
match-up of King Felix and Jon Lester and there was some
fantastic pitching between the two as it wasnt "decided" until
the 7th inning. King Felix gave-up a longball to the newly
acquired Adam Dunn but that was "it". Jon Lester gave-up
longball's to Kyle Seager and Corey Hart "back-to-back"
in the 7th and you have your final score..M's win 2-1.
King Felix had his "serious-face" on today and it appears
he's already forgotten the past 3-starts that were under
adverse celestial alignments. King Felix had the look today
pitching against the A's like..."you are going down" to every
batter. The King wasnt messing around..pitched 8-innings
and only Adam Dunn managed scored a run off him. Felix
hasnt won a game in September in a couple years. So
Felix goes to 14-5 and very much in the CyYoung hunt.
I feel good about taking 2 of 3 at Oakland and now the
next 4 games at Texas. What happens at Texas if its
good will have the M's right in the thick of things.
Every game with the Texas Rangers at Arlington has
no safety net as you better have the offence ready
for 4-great days at the plate.

Listenin' ta the game on the radio and watchin' it unfold via the internets... Dammit! Iwakuma hands off the game at 5-1 ta Furbush...and five relievers later, and it's 7-5! And this is an above average bullpen? Give us a break will ya! These guys can't throw a strike if they were 40 feet away from the hitter! Shit!

Mariners use long ball to hold off Rangers

Morales homers twice, Zunino swats No. 20 on the season

video thumbnail

Morales rips his second homer of the game

ARLINGTON -- One night, the Mariners are cranking out runs one base at a time with walks and singles, and the next night they're hammering homers. Either way, it's working.

Seattle won Friday for the second night in a row in Texas, 7-5, pounding four homers after the Mariners scored 10 runs the night before with only three extra-base hits.

Kendrys Morales hit a pair of two-run homers, in the second and sixth innings, to lead Seattle. The Mariners also got homers from Mike Zunino, who hit a solo shot in the fifth, and No. 9 hitter Brad Miller, who hit a two-run homer two batters after Zunino to end Rangers starter Scott Baker's night.

Zunino's homer was his 20th this year, setting the Mariners record for most homers in a season by a catcher. He leads all AL catchers in home runs.

The Mariners have been on something of a power-hitting tear lately, with homers in seven consecutive games, their most since last season. Friday marked the eighth time this season that Seattle has hit three or more home runs in a game.

Hisashi Iwakuma, who was dynamite against Texas in two meetings earlier this season, earned the win in an abbreviated 5 1/3-inning outing in which he surrendered three earned runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out five.

Iwakuma loaded the bases in the fifth, but got a double-play, run-scoring grounder out of Elvis Andrus and retired Tomas Telis on a grounder to short to escape with minimal damage.

In his two previous starts, one in Arlington and the other in Seattle, Iwakuma pitched eight innings for the victory each time, allowing a total of three earned runs and 12 hits.

While Friday was business as usual for the playoff-chasing Mariners, the Rangers began the evening reeling from the sudden, unexpected resignation of long-time manager Ron Washington earlier in the day.

Starting pitcher Baker shouldered the loss, allowing five earned runs on four hits -- three of them homers -- in 4 1/3 innings.

The Mariners' bullpen again held tight as manager Lloyd McClendon used six relievers to hold down the lead. Fernando Rodney earned his 42nd save of the season despite allowing a run in the ninth.

Chavez cut, but OK: Endy Chavez left the game in the fifth inning after he sustained a cut on his forehead when his helmet fell off as he was sliding into second base on a steal and his head collided with Rangers shortstop Luis Sardinas's leg. He received three stitches, did not show any concussion symptoms and should be available Saturday.

(They barely held off Texas! In fact it looked like they wanted ta lose! Keyryst!) This late in the season, ya can't afford ta let a game get won by the opposing team! Damn!

So far so good for the M's visit to Texas. See my write-up
Sunday night. Pretty shocking news Texas Rangers manager
Ron Washington resigns mid-afternoon before Friday's game
against the M's. More to this story for sure. The big question
mark over my head right now is can Chris Young pitch 5-innings
Saturday. I have no clue. If he makes a rebound start and goes
5-6 innings I would be in la-la land. If he gets rocked early,
the same pitcher that relieved him in Oakland for 6-innings
one Taiwan Walker just happens to have the same rest as
Chris Young. I would imagine Lloyd McClendon will have the
shortest of leashes on Chris Young with "12-relievers" in the
bullpen. For Chris Young's sake I would really like to see him
pitch a good game and re-establish himself going forward.
If he struggles again..lets hope not.

I had some reservations about Chris Young's next start
at Texas but he pitched his usual 5-innings and gave
up 2 "unearned runs". Thats what he has done most of
his starts go 5-6 inning of pitching out of jams and being
lucky most of the time to get out of it. Well Chris Young
pitched well enough to keep going and has me believing
that he is not done pitching yet this season and thats good.
Chris gets a "no-decision" and I'll take it and I'm sure Chris
will too. M's win 4-2 and Rodney shoots his 43rd arrow.
M's go for the sweep at Texas Sunday with James Paxton on the
mound. James has been pretty "lights-out" his last few starts
and I think he's going to shut-down Rangers and the M's get
the rarest of sweeps..at Texas.

The M's trip to Texas caught the worst heat as it was 95 degrees
at the 7:05 pm start time all 3-night games. M's did great the
first 3 games but what I dint mention was Saturday Night's
game had a 3hr 13min rain delay before 1st pitch and the game
got over well after midnight which is no biggie unless you have
a day game Sunday. Listened to M's pre-game on the radio and
Lloyd McClendon was asked how much sleep he got last night
and he said about 3hrs. Sure the M's team dint get much more
than that as well. So go back out into the muggy heat at Arlington
for a 2pm Sunday game. M's have James Paxton going on the hill
and the Rangers send fresh from rehab Derek Holland who has
a very good record against the M's. Pitchers duel like many
thought as a 0-0 game for a long time. Paxton finally gives
up 1 run and really pitched well this start. M's offense couldnt
solve Holland once again and cant cross home plate. Really
great gritty performance by James Paxton and he continues
to get greater. M's offence is so much more potent today
and they had their chances to win this 1-0 game but came
up short. Great road trip as the M's take 2 of 3 from Oakland
and 3 of 4 at Texas. No rest as the M's fly home to face those
pesky Astros Monday night.

The M's and the Astros..at Safeco. The Astros are a team the M's
havent quite figured out yet. Yes the Astros are at the bottom of
the standings but they got a lot of young players that are getting
good and more on the way. Their starting pitching was great
all 3 games and the hitting was done by a lot of names you
never heard before but you will by next year. The Astros take
the series 2-1 at Safeco. If you are keeping astrological score..
the series was played under the celestial influences of Mercury
square Pluto and Venus oppose Neptune. Ballplayers have no
idea about this kind of stuff but I do. Mercury square Pluto
would be the "hit" you dint want to see or many of them.
Think it was more the Venus oppose Neptune as the M's
were trying to "dream-up hits" to keep in the wildcard but
was just that..a dream. These aspects will be long gone when
the M's host the A's for a chance to gain P-2 in the AL West
on Friday night. This is a huge 3-game series.

Why don't Seattle fans seem to care about the Mariners' success?

While the Mariners are seriously in contention to make the playoffs, Seattle fans still appear to be holding out in terms of jumping on the bandwagon.

KIRO Radio's Dori Monson was surprised when he turned on the Mariners game Tuesday night to see the stands looking pretty bare.

"There was nobody in the stands," said Monson. "There were only 11,300 people at the game Tuesday night."

710 ESPN Seattle host Danny O'Neil agreed there haven't been as many people there as he'd like to see. "I was bummed to see the number of people there."

O'Neil said the play on the field by the team has been fun to watch, and it's really too bad the fans haven't come around yet.

"This team is a fun team to root for. The actual experience of being around and pulling for this team is really pretty incredible," said O'Neil.

While the team is really making some headway, according to O'Neil, it's also somewhat understandable that after such a long playoff drought fans are a little skeptical.

"It's been a dark decade," said O'Neil. "This team hasn't made the playoffs now going back to 2001, over 13 years. Some of that is going to take time to build that back."

As for attendance in this series specifically, Wednesday night also saw low attendance with just under 17,000 fans, O'Neil says the Mariners shouldn't take all the blame for that.

"The Houston Astros deserve some of this blame too. The Houston Astros are the team that's in town right now and they've stripped their major league product down so far that now this is the second to third year of them being a largely irrelevant franchise. If I'm a Mariners fan, the Houston Astros is the last series I want to go see."

There is an upcoming series though that O'Neil thinks might be more likely to draw fans out.

"I'm curious to see what happens this weekend. The Oakland A's are in town. That's the team the Mariners are chasing in the American League West standings," said O'Neil. "If the Mariners pass the A's, they're going to make the playoffs. I'm really convinced of that, regardless of what happens with Detroit."

Are you going to turn out to support the Mariners?

Mariners reaching the playoffs? Flip a coin... Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps Krink has a better read on the Ms. After all he knows about the stars 'n' schitt, and how the planets can affect the game, and the outcome of the entire 2014 season.

Will they get ta the playoffs... It's an open question. This weekend series with Oakland will answer more'n a few questions!

Well its pretty simple to have a hit in attendance this time in
September as the kids are back in skoolen during the weeknight
games. Think attendence will be good for the A's in town for
a Fri-Sat-Sun series. All kinds of football going on this weekend
but M's fans will fill-up Safeco and be loud. M's got something
"going-on".
