About nine days left in 2010. Uke says (and believes) the death toll (murders) in Philly will end the year at 313. New Years Eve celebrants kill at least two apiece. With guns!

Baltimore's total however will shame Philly into a distant fourth, or seventh place!

Police ID 2 shooting victims

Police have identified two men slain in unrelated cases this week as William Garnett, 28, of Sharon Hill, and Gerald Crittenton, 30, of Southwest Philadelphia.

Garnett, of Bartlett Avenue near Chester Pike, was shot multiple times in the head and body just before 1 a.m. Tuesday on Mario Lanza Boulevard near Crane Street, in Southwest Philadelphia.

Crittenton, of 55th Street near Chancellor, was shot in the head at Millick and Arch streets in West Philadelphia. Police reported no immediate arrests in either case. Tipsters may call homicide detectives at 215-686-3334 or -3335.

Help sought in shooting

Police are asking the public's help to identify a man who shot a security guard in the neck inside the Sunoco A-Plus gas station on Girard Avenue near 38th Street, West Philadelphia, at 11:15 p.m. on Dec. 15.

The guard, who was a customer, confronted an unruly man causing a disturbance. The man left the station, but returned with a gun and shot the guard, stole his cell phone and fled.

The guard was recovering at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. The gunman, who fled in a green Chevy Venture minivan, is described as black, age 35 to 45, about 5 feet 10, 170 pounds, with a mustache. He was wearing a blue Polo hat, blue hooded jacket, blue jeans and white sneakers. Tipsters should call Southwest Detectives at 215-686-3183 or -3184.

Bank robber nets $3,000

A heavyset man with a beard held up the PNC Bank at 862 Haddon Ave. in Collingswood, N.J., Wednesday afternoon. The man threatened to shoot a teller, but no gun was seen. He took about $3,000 in cash and fled. He was described as white, 6 feet tall and between 25 and 35 years old.

Tipsters should contact Sgt. William Townsend, of the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, at 856-225-8400, or Collings-wood police at 856-854-0087.

Woman found dead in Kensington, unclear if strangler involved

The discovery of a woman's body Friday afternoon in a Kensington house drew a swift response from the task force investigating the Kensington Strangler, but police said it was too early to know if there was a connection, or even if the woman was murdered.

The body of a young white woman was discovered inside a two-story rowhouse in the 2800 block of North C Street near Kensington Avenue around 4 p.m., police said. Officials said they were waiting for a medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

In recent weeks, police believe, one man may have sexually assaulted and murdered three women and attacked others. Elaine Goldberg, 21, Nicole Piacentini, 35, and Casey Mahoney, 27, were all found partially nude in abandoned lots in the neighborhood.

On Friday evening, police sealed off C Street to traffic and officers from the Crime Scene Unit carried out paper bags full of evidence.

City records show the house is owned by Lawrence Hollman. Neighbors, who know him only as Larry, said he is in his 60s, lives alone except for two pet Chihuahuas, and would let people stay at his house, possibly charging them by the day or for shorter periods.

His wife died several years ago, said Vanessa Gonzalez, 19. A few months ago, his water was shut off and he survived off of buckets of water from neighbors.

Nicole Sánchez, 17, said Larry came to her family's house "crying, saying he didn't do it."

Larry explained that a man and a woman in her early 20s were dropped off Thursday night by another man who then drove away, Sánchez said.

Sánchez said Larry told her that the man and woman stayed upstairs overnight and may have been using drugs.

About 11:30 a.m. Friday, the man left the house and told Larry the woman was still asleep on the first floor.

When Larry checked on her, she was unresponsive. He placed a blanket over the woman's body and called 911, Sánchez said.

"He don't mess with nobody," Sánchez said. "He's a quiet guy."

The house is located a few blocks from the Somerset stop of the El running above Kensington Avenue. The area is a magnet for drug addicts and the dealers who supply them.

A total of $37,000 in reward money is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the strangler.

Experts: Big blunder usually serial killers' fatal flaw

YOU MENTION the words "serial killer" and the names of the damned flash before your eyes like glimpses of old nightmares.

Dahmer. Bundy. BTK. Heidnik. Graham. Gacy. The list goes on.

What they have in common - aside from an appalling ability to exterminate human beings with relative ease - is a tendency to eventually screw up and make sloppy mistakes that help put them behind bars forever.

That common flaw might be what helps Philadelphia police ultimately catch the Kensington Strangler - the maniac who has been linked through DNA evidence to the slayings of three women in the last month. So far, the killer has avoided capture despite a $37,000 reward, sketches and surveillance footage of a possible suspect.

"In many cases, the killer gets cocky. He feels omnipotent because the police haven't caught him," said Steven Egger, a prominent serial-killer expert and associate professor of criminology at the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

"He figures they won't catch him. Then he gets sloppy. Look what happened to Ted Bundy. He was caught running around in a stolen Volkswagen."

Egger speaks from experience. He worked decades ago as a homicide detective in Michigan. He was on the investigative team that arrested John Norman Collins, who murdered six women in southeastern Michigan between 1967 and '69.

Collins was spotted by a shop owner before he gave a ride to one of his victims. Hair found on her underwear linked Collins to the crime.

"Any serial-murderer investigation is difficult because you're talking about stranger-to-stranger homicides," Egger said. "In most instances, there aren't any witnesses. You don't have a whole lot to go on."

Philadelphia police have enlisted the help of the FBI to work up a profile of the Kensington Strangler.

Much of what investigators know about him has already been reported publicly. All of his victims - Elaine Goldberg, Nicole Piacentini and Casey Mahoney - were white women who battled drug problems.

All were found partially clothed and sexually assaulted in desolate Kensington lots known to attract prostitutes and drug addicts. Mahoney and Piacentini were positioned facedown, police have said.

"If he's posing the victims, it's a challenge to the police: 'Catch me,' " Eggers said. "I'm fairly sure he'll kill again because he's picking the most vulnerable people that he can find."

In that respect, the strangler shares something in common with Gary Heidnik and Harrison "Marty" Graham, two of Philadelphia's most notorious murderers.

Graham was convicted in 1988 of having strangled and raped seven women in his two-room North Philadelphia apartment. He kept his victims' remains in the apartment, and was caught only after he was evicted for the horrific odors that emanated from the rooms.

Heidnik kept five prostitutes as prisoners in his North Philadelphia basement between 1986 and '87. The women were regularly tortured and raped; two died.

Heidnik cooked the remains of one of the victims, Sarah Lindsay. Heidnik's house of horrors was exposed when he briefly let one of his captives, Josefina Rivera, go free. She called the police.

"Heidnik's slip-up was that he trusted [Rivera] too much," said attorney A. Charles Peruto Jr., who represented both Heidnik and Logan serial killer Juan Covington.

The strangler, he said, "isn't going trust anybody. He's a guy who's going to get himself caught from a mistake. A girl might get away, and a cop might be nearby."

Heidnik was motivated by "pure evil," Peruto said. The Kensington Strangler, he said, "probably gets a thrill from this. He does it, gets away with it, and gets attention in the newspapers."

Mark Safarik - a retired FBI profiler who testified at the trial of Robert Yates, of Spokane, Wash., who murdered 16 women between 1975 and 1988 - said the Kensington Strangler knows he can find easy prey along Kensington Avenue, where many women rely on prostitution to support their drug habits.

But with police and community members on high alert, striking again in Kensington could be too risky for the killer, Safarik noted.

"Someone is going to recognize this guy," he said, "unless he goes underground and leaves the area."

Staff writer Stephanie Farr contributed to this report.

Is man in sketch the Kensington Strangler?

Police are asking Kensington residents to keep in mind that the man who has killed three women in the neighborhood may look nothing like the composite sketch that has been plastered on street posts and in stations along SEPTA's Frankford El line.

Though the man pictured in the sketch is a suspect in nonfatal attacks on three women in the neighborhood in recent months, he might have no connection to the serial killer preying on women there.

Investigators are still analyzing DNA evidence found last week at the site of Casey Mahoney's slaying. Depending on the sample, the genetic material could help determine the killer's race.

Women involved with drugs or prostitution in Kensington should take extreme caution when dealing with men they don't know, Philadelphia Police Lt. Raymond Evers said.

"These women need to be careful," he said. "Some might think it's safe if they don't accept a 'date' with a young black man. Maybe they think an older white guy is fine. But he could be the guy who's doing the stranglings."

Police have flooded Kensington in recent weeks, using undercover and uniformed officers to arrest people involved in prostitution in an effort to find a suspect in the killings. Authorities also are asking women in the area not to walk alone and to avoid high-risk behavior, such as following strange men to deserted places.

A $37,000 reward was posted this week for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man responsible for the slayings. Of that, $7,000 can be awarded to anyone who provides information leading solely to an arrest, no conviction required.

DNA evidence has determined that the three women strangled in Kensington since Nov. 3 were killed by the same man. In addition to the DNA, the slayings share circumstantial similarities: The women were white, between the ages of 21 and 35, and were all involved in drugs or prostitution. Each was found nude from the waist down, showing signs of sexual assault. Two of the women were found posed in the same position.

Investigators have no conclusive evidence linking the three nonfatal attacks to the slayings. But like the slain women, the surviving victims are white. They were working as prostitutes. At least two were choked to the point of unconsciousness, and they told police they were sexually assaulted. The attacks took place near or at the places where the slaying victims were found.

"These things do match up," Evers said. "There's a lot of comparisons. But we can't say with 100 percent certainty that we're talking about the same guy."

The women who survived the assaults have all described their attacker similarly, and police used those descriptions to develop the composite sketch.

The man in the sketch is slender and in his 20s. He stands between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-10. The first two victims, who were attacked in October, said he had a goatee and a mark on his cheek. A woman who was attacked weeks later told police there was no goatee or mark, and she said he had sideburns. Two women described him as soft-spoken; one said he had carried a white iPod and called himself Anthony.

A surveillance camera near the site of a Dec. 6 nonfatal attack also captured the image of a man who appears to resemble the composite sketch.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or 215-686-8477.

Despite String Of Attacks, Its Still Christmas In Kensington

December 24, 2010 4:05 PM

640796

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) Philadelphia police continue to hunt for a strangler preying on women in a crime-ridden part of Kensington Avenue but that hasnt kept people away from the area.

This is where everything happens; this is where everybody gives out the sample, the free drugs. Tony explained why neither the strangler, nor the cold, nor Christmas keeps people off the corner of Kensington and Somerset.

He says its a certain kind of desperation, but this life is no good. Its not good. All of it is misery.

But, befitting the holiday, even amidst the misery, there were signs of redemption. A group of friends was giving out warm clothes while a church group was serving hot food, and a message:

We want these people to know they dont have to stay in this situation so we try to help them along the way and just say, hey listen, if you make the right decisions you dont have to stay here, you can come out of this lifestyle.

Still that message is a hard sell in this part of Kensington.

Reported By Pat Loeb, KYW Newsradio.
