Perhaps the big 'blizzard' has slowed the murderers, making it damn near impossible ta reach intended victims.

Uke will revise his estimate down a notch... Yep. The Philly murder total is now 309. NOT as previously stated 313. Uke stands by his numbers. Always!

North Philly man shot dead

1 MAN SLAIN IN HIGH-RISE

A North Philly man was shot to death Sunday night in the stairwell of the high-rise apartment building where he lived, police said yesterday.

Stephen Wilson, 21, who lived in the Blumberg Apartments, a Philadelphia Housing Authority complex on Judson Way near Jefferson Street, was shot multiple times between the ninth and 10th floors about 7:50 p.m., police said. Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.

2 CHARGES FILED IN CHRISTMAS-DAY SLAYING

An East Germantown man has been charged with murder and related offenses for allegedly shooting a man to death on Christmas Day.

Troy Merke, 26, of Stockton Road near Price Street, allegedly shot Tyree Young, 24, about 4 a.m. Saturday after they argued and fought at Young's house, which is on the same block as Merke's, according to police. Authorities did not immediately know the nature or cause of the argument.

3 THE THIRD TIME WASN'T THE CHARM, APPARENTLY

A Delaware man charged with robbing a Newark motel three times in December has allegedly struck again - at the same motel. Delaware State Police said yesterday that Daniel Prouse, 38, of New Castle, was charged with robbery and violating the terms of his release after he robbed the Comfort Suites in Newark on Sunday. Prouse had been charged with robbing the motel on Dec. 9, Dec. 12 and Dec. 20.

Police say Prouse arrived at the motel on Sunday just before 10 p.m. and demanded money from a clerk. A trooper patrolling the area later saw Prouse, who matched the description of the robber.A bag of money was found in Prouse's pocket, police said.

UPDATE: ID ON CHESTER VICTIM

A Chester man who was shot to death early Friday has been identified as Terrance Lewis, 18, police said. Lewis was shot multiple times on Rose Street near Upland in Chester about 12:40 a.m.

Robbers clip wrong victim: Wife of reputed Philly mobster

THREE ARMED ROBBERS didn't know what they were getting into Dec. 21 when they held up a South Philly hair salon and took jewelry from the owner, who happens to be the wife of a reputed mob figure, police say.

The Louisville, Ky., trio, visiting relatives in Darby for the holidays, went on a robbery spree for several days, knocking off businesses in South Philadelphia and Darby, cops said. They made a killing in spoils, which included the engagement and wedding rings of Terri Staino, 38, wife of reputed Philly mobster Anthony Staino.

Police say that the bandits would have gotten away with the crimes, and possibly more, if they hadn't been caught driving the wrong way on a one-way street an hour after they held up Staino at John Anthony Hair Styling for Men, at 10th and Tasker streets.

"It was a good job by the police," said Detective John Komorowski, of East Detectives, where the suspects were detained. "They were up here for a couple of days robbing, right before the holiday, but we recovered stolen belongings from two robberies."

"It was a horrible thing that happened to her," said Gregory Pagano, Terri Staino's attorney, when reached at his office yesterday. "She was an innocent victim."

Terri Staino declined to comment last night.

The episode began shortly after Staino arrived at her salon earlier than usual, about 9:15 a.m., police spokeswoman Christine O'Brien said.

She was alone inside and the door was still locked, when two men knocked on the door and asked to get haircuts, O'Brien said.

"She figured because of the holiday season they wanted haircuts, so she opens the door and offers them coffee," O'Brien said of Staino.

Staino went to the back of the salon, and one of the men followed. Pointing a gun at her face, he ordered her to take off her necklace, engagement ring and wedding ring, police said.

Meanwhile, an armed accomplice stole a laptop, Staino's checkbook and hair supplies before the men fled on foot, police said.

An hour later in North Philly, 24th District cops spotted a silver Honda with Kentucky tags going the wrong way on Water Street near Somerset, Komorowski said.

When police approached the car, they spotted a gun between the feet of the front passenger and arrested the three men, Komorowski said.

Investigators later realized that the trio fit the descriptions of suspects in the Staino robbery.

Later, cops searched the car and recovered four guns, Staino's stolen belongings and an item from another alleged robbery in South Philly two days earlier, Komorowski said.

The trio, who police identified as Tran Phuong, 36, Phuc Nguyen, 18, and Chau Tron, 21, face gun and robbery charges, as well as charges of recklessly endangering another person, criminal conspiracy, terroristic threats and other offenses.

Philadelphia Police and other law-enforcement agencies are looking into at least three other robberies that may involve the men, police said.

Anthony Staino, 55, is known to authorities as a longtime associate of the Ligambi crime organization. He's never been charged with a crime but is considered the No. 2 man in the South Philadelphia mob, according to news reports.

Anthony and Terri Staino - who, according to online records, have residences in South Philadelphia and Gloucester County - were married in September and reportedly had an extravagant wedding reception at the Curtis Center.

Among the 300 guests was Anthony's uncle, reputed Philadelphia mob figure Ralph "Junior" Staino Jr., 78.

Also on hand were Philadelphia cops and FBI agents, who snapped photos of guests as they arrived. Federal authorities subpoenaed the wedding photos.

Police: Man Repeatedly Rams Upper Darby Police Car

December 31, 2010 9:37 AM

upper_darby_PD

Reporting Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) A South Philadelphia man is behind bars, charged with repeatedly ramming his pickup into an Upper Darby police cruiser last night.

It happened around 6:30 pm, when Upper Darby police were serving a protection from abuse arrest warrant against William Chestnut of the 300-block of Winton Street in South Philadelphia.  Upper Darby Police Superintendent Mike Chitwood says a neighbor identified as James Moore apparently took issue with Chestnuts arrest, got into his pickup with his pit bull in the front seat, and took off after the cops.

Then, Chitwood says, He chased the police I mean, he rammed them all the way from Seventh Street to Broad Street. And when you see the police vehicle, you can see the damage that was caused to it.

Chitwood says at Broad and Oregon, Moore rammed the police car so hard it spun around. He says the officers, fearing for their lives, fired at Moores pickup. Moore was shot in the hand and his dog was killed. The two officers suffered minor neck and back injuries. Moore was treated and released, and charged with aggravated assault.

Woman Allegedly Choked And Raped In Kensington

December 31, 2010 9:23 AM

crime_scene

Reporting Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) A woman claims she was choked into unconsciousness and raped in Kensington on Wednesday night.

She told police that she willingly went into an abandoned building with a man, apparently for consensual sex, but he attacked her soon after they got inside. When she regained consicousness Thursday morning, she was only partially clothed and said she was raped.

The attacker is described as a heavy-set hispanic man; he does not match the sketch going around of the man dubbed the Kensington Strangler.

Shes the fourth woman to survive a similar attack. Three other women were killed DNA evidence has linked one man to those deaths. And police are investigating to see if there are possibly two dangerous men on the loose.

After latest assault, police say there could be two Kensington Stranglers

Police are investigating a woman's report that she was assaulted and choked into unconsciousness Wednesday night in an abandoned house in Kensington.

Residents near the three-story structure at Orleans Street and Kensington Avenue were left to wonder if the so-called "Kensington Strangler" had struck again, but police were noncommital about the possibility.

About 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, the victim joined a man at the abandoned property for consensual sex, police said.

"At some point, the man wanted more," said police spokesman Lt. Ray Evers. That, he said, "led to a verbal and physical altercation . . . and she was assaulted."

Evers said that the woman had been choked and had passed out. She told police she believed that she had been sexually assaulted. She contacted police yesterday morning.

The woman described her attacker as 5 feet 9, a light-skinned Hispanic man who appears Caucasian, heavy-set with a protruding abdomen and a fresh haircut.

Evers said the incident shared similarities with previous cases, but said that the description of the assailant did not seem to match the widely circulated sketch of the serial killer.

Police have acknowledged that more than one person could be roaming Kensington and choking women.

"One could be doing the homicides, and another doing the assaults," Evers said. "We're fully aware that it could be more than one."

Lisa Perez, 24, a mother of two who lives across the street from the latest incident, said last night that she is living in fear.

"I feel trapped in my own house," said Perez, adding that she and her husband, Lex, 32, struggle to keep prostitutes and drug users away from their home.

Three women - Elaine Goldberg, 21; Nicole Piacentini, 35, and Casey Mahoney, 27 - were strangled and sexually assaulted. Their deaths have been linked by DNA to the man popularly known as the Kensington Strangler. Three other women said that they survived similar attacks during which they were choked into unconsciousness.

Tipsters are urged to call police at 215-686-8477.
